Marchionne leaves a surprise: Manley at the helm of FCA, Camilleri of Ferrari

A surprise Sergio Marchionne leave driving for health reasons and ahead of time fca and, unexpectedly, also that of Ferrari. The situation worsened in a few days after surgery on his right shoulder at the end of June at the University Hospital of Zurich: for the Italian-Canadian supermanager it should have been a fairly simple operation, but it didn't happen that way. And now he is in intensive care with very little hope of recovery.

Exor, the parent company of the Agnelli family which controls FCA, Ferrari and CNH, therefore urgently brought together the three boards, which immediately proceeded to change the guard of Sergio Marchionne, in office for exactly 14 years. All internal sequences.

With reference to Marchionne's health conditions, FCA "communicates with deep sadness that they occurred during the week unexpected complications during the post-operative convalescence, which worsened further in the last few hours – reads a note from the group – For these reasons, Marchionne will not be able to resume his work”.

The FCA board of directors "first of all expressed its closeness to Sergio Marchionne and his family, underlining the extraordinary human and professional contribution he has made to the company over the years" and "has decided to accelerate the transition process for the position of CEO in been in place for months now and appointed Mike Manley as chief executive officer”.

FCA PASSES INTO THE HANDS OF MIKE MANLEY

The new number one of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is the British Mike Manley, until now CEO of the Jeep brand and head of the Ram brand. Since 2011 he has also been a member of FCA's Group Executive Council (GEC), the group's most important decision-making body after the Board.

Born in Edenbridge, Kent, on 6 March 1964, Manley graduated in engineering at Southbank University in London, and then obtained a master's degree in business administration at Ashridge Management College.

In 2000 he joined the DaimlerChrysler group as director of network development for Great Britain. Eight years later came a promotion to executive vice president of international sales and global product planning operations. At this stage he was mainly involved in planning and sales outside of North America.

Since 2009 he has been president and CEO of Jeep, a brand that has experienced spectacular growth in the last 10 years, going from just over 300 to 1,4 million vehicles sold each year. Since 2015, Manley has also headed the Ram brand, which specializes in the production of pickups and vans.

The English manager and his team “will work on the realization of the development plan 2018-2022 presented at Balocco on 1 June, which will ensure FCA an ever stronger and more independent future". Thus in a note the board of directors of the FCA group.

FERRARI: CAMILLERI THE NEW CEO, JOHN ELKANN PRESIDENT

Marchionne's successor at Ferrari is Louis Carey Camilleri, who will hold the position of managing director. The president will be John Elkann.

Born in 1955 in Alexandria of Egypt, but with a Maltese passport, Camilleri studied in Switzerland, graduating in Economics from the University of Lausanne. He began as a business analyst at the American chemical and technology conglomerate WR Grace and Company, before joining Philip Morris at the age of 23, where he climbed to the top. In 1995 he was named CEO of Kraft Foods and the following year he became CFO of Philip Morris.

Camilleri was also on the boards of two Mexican giants: the telephone operator America Movil and the telecommunications holding Telmex International. It seems that his personal assets exceed 180 million euros.

A father of three, divorced since 2004, last year he was accused by the British tabloids of having an affair with former supermodel Naomi Campbell.

CNH INDUSTRIAL: HEYWOOD PRESIDENT, NEILSON REMAINS CEO AD INTERIM

As for CNH Industrial, the board "has noted with deep regret that the president Sergio Marchionne will not be able to return to work" and has "entrusted the presidency of the company to Suzanne Heywood".

The Board, reads a note, “will continue to work on the selection process for the CEO already underway. Meanwhile, Derek Neilson will continue as interim CEO of the company, ensuring business continuity.

The board “wishes to underline the extraordinary leadership and commitment that Marchionne has dedicated to the company. Their thoughts go out to him and his family."

ELKANN: "DEEPLY SUFFERED, SERGIO AN ENLIGHTENED LEADER"

“I am deeply saddened by Sergio's condition. This is an unthinkable situation until a few hours ago, which leaves everyone with a sense of injustice. My first thought goes to Sergio and his family ”. This is what we read in a note from John Elkann.

“What struck me about Sergio right from the start, when we met to talk about the possibility of him coming to work for the group, even more than his managerial skills and uncommon intelligence, were his human qualities, his generosity and his way of understanding people. In the last 14 years we have lived together successes and difficulties, internal and external crises, but also unique and unrepeatable moments, both from a personal and professional point of view".

Elkann recalls that “for many, Sergio was an enlightened leader, an incomparable point of reference. For me he was a person to deal with and to trust, a mentor and above all a friend ”.

Marchionne, continues Elkann, “has taught us to think differently and to have the courage to change, often even in an unconventional way, always acting with a sense of responsibility for the companies and for the people who work there. He taught us that the only question that is really worth asking, at the end of each day, is whether we have been able to change something for the better, whether we have been able to make a difference. And Sergio has always made a difference, wherever he has found himself working and in the lives of so many people. Today, that difference continues to be made by the culture that he has introduced in all the companies that he has managed and has become an integral part of them ”.

Finally, the President of FCA explains that “the transitions just announced, even if from a personal point of view they will not be without pain, allow us to guarantee our companies the maximum possible continuity and preserve their culture. For me it has been a privilege to have Sergio by my side for all these years. I ask everyone to understand the current situation, respecting the privacy of Sergio and the people closest to him".
