Bad weather, tornado in Lazio: 2 dead and injured

A sudden tornado hit Lazio in the afternoon, where two men died and many were injured. The collapse of a cornice killed a young foreigner of about 20 in Ladispoli, on the Roman coast, while the fall of a tree caused the death of a 61-year-old in Cesano, a few kilometers from the capital, where many trees have fallen and many are been the buildings flooded.

Injured people, uncovered roofs, fallen trees and flooding on the Roman coast hit in the afternoon by a violent whirlwind and a storm. According to what has been learned, the 118 rescued several injured people: five people residing in two buildings damaged by the tornado in Ladispoli are not in serious condition. While some people from the other building reached the hospital by their own means. In Cerveteri, still on the Lazio coast, however, the strong wind broke the window of a restaurant and two people were slightly injured and transported by 118 to hospital. An ambulance in Ladispoli and a car in Fiumicino were also hit by a tree.

The whirlwind that hit the Roman coast is one of the events that are considered "unpredictable": the weather alert was foreseen, abundant rainfall was expected but not such a devastating phenomenon, which arrived from the sea. This is what is learned from the Civil Protection of the Lazio Region. In the afternoon, the Region recalls, a weather alert was issued indicating an 'orange' code on the Apennines of Rieti, Aniene and the Liri Basin, a sign that the perturbation is moving towards southern Lazio.

The Civil Protection of Lazio therefore invites the citizens of that area to move only in cases of real need. In the meantime, about fifty teams are at work, especially due to falling tiles, flooding, falling trees or eaves. In these hours the Civil Protection of the Region, between the interventions in support of the earthquake victims and this last wave of bad weather, is experiencing moments of great commitment at 360 degrees.

Bad weather is putting a strain on the areas hit by the earthquake but the red alert was also triggered in Florence where the Arno is in full flow precisely on the days when the 50th anniversary of the dramatic flood is being remembered. In Florence, at the Uffizi, the Arno at 15,30 pm on Sunday reached almost four meters in height, thus exceeding the first threshold (three metres). Instead, the second threshold (5.50 meters) was exceeded in the locality of Nave a Rovezzano, where the height of the water reached 5.65 meters for an hour. Following the abundant rains, in Florence the Arno reached the level of the door of the rowing club near the Ponte Vecchio. A car parked on the access ramp to the rowing club at Ponte Vecchio ended up under water and was recovered by the fire brigade crane, with the intervention of divers too.

Strong gusts of wind damaged the tensile structure used as a kindergarten in Arli di Acquasanta Terme (Ascoli Piceno), one of the municipalities affected by the earthquake. “Part of the cover is blown – says the mayor Sante Stangoni -. The earthquake was not enough". Lessons suspended from today but hopefully "no later than November 14th". 135 kindergarten and primary school children go to the bridge school (the masonry one is unusable). A second temporary structure will open on 25 November in the hamlet of Centrale.

Concern also in Friuli where the Isonzo has exceeded the danger level.
