Another attack in London. During the night a white van ran over the Muslim faithful outside the Finnsbury Park mosque, immediately after the evening prayers in the month of Ramadan. The provisional toll is one dead and eight injured, three of them seriously, while the man driving was arrested by the police after being pulled out of the vehicle by some of the people who survived the collision and blocked in what witnesses have defined a violent scuffle.
The police are investigating the incident as "a potential terrorist attack", Prime Minister Theresa May declared towards dawn after the initial official cautions, announcing the meeting of an emergency committee chaired by herself for the morning. For the Muslim Council of Britain, an institutional point of reference for the large Islamic community in the United Kingdom, there have never been any doubts: those people were hit "deliberately", the organization had denounced almost immediately in a note, and then increase the dose and evoke "a violent manifestation of Islamophobia", with the request to the authorities to guarantee greater "protection to the mosques".
The testimonies confirm the same impression. Everyone present told of that van that crashed into people at high speed and of people, young and old, taken by surprise and thrown onto the asphalt. When the vehicle stopped, the man driving - described as "white and beardless" and later identified by Scotland Yard as a 48-year-old - was confronted by the angry crowd.
According to some witnesses he would have shouted: "I kill all Muslims". He will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. To confirm the presence of two other accomplices who would then have fled.
