Lockdown for Christmas and New Years: bars, restaurants and shops closed

The new Dpcm on the Government table provides for a red zone throughout Italy from 24 to 27 December and from 31 to 3 January with few exceptions

Lockdown for Christmas and New Years: bars, restaurants and shops closed

It goes towards the lockdown for Christmas and New Years. In all, eight days of national red zone, but not consecutive: from the 24 27 December e 31 3 from December to January. This is the most probable hypothesis for the new Dpcm on the table of the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, who however hesitates and finds it difficult to make the final decisions.

On a practical level, it means that – in those days – bars, restaurants and shops will remain closed across the country. Not only: non-essential travel within the Municipality of residence will also be prohibited (the only exceptions, as always, will be for reasons of work, health or urgent need). It will be necessary to leave the house self-certification, which may be requested and controlled by the police.

The goal is to limit social contacts as much as possible, so as not to cause a new surge in infections that could trigger a third wave of the pandemic in January. Also because, in the meantime, the second is not over yet: the numbers are improving, but very slowly, and the deaths are still very high (680 only on Tuesday).

However, it is clear that, during the holiday season, family gatherings in homes are the most worrying. For this reason, with the establishment of the national red zone, the government effectively puts Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day lunch for non-cohabiting family members are banned.

However, the Dpcm should contain two exceptions:

  • the possibility of extend family gatherings to a maximum of two "close relatives", for example elderly parents, with the recommendation of the mask;
  • the green light to celebration of masses, respecting some hourly limits already in force for the curfew.

However, none of these measures affects the weekdays of 28, 29 and 30 December, in which the rules of the yellow zone (restaurants open for lunch, shops all day, curfew at 22pm). However, a passage in is not excluded for those dates orange zone, which would also prevent you from leaving the Municipality of residence.

If this is the scenario designed by the new Dpcm, it will still be a compromise. Conte was against the red zone, while the ministers Roberto Speranza, Dario Franceschini and Francesco Boccia – supported by the 5S – wanted to close everything from December 21 (or 24) until January 6.
