Italian in cinema, Italian in cinema: the eBook by Goware and Accademia della Crusca

On the occasion of the XVII Week of the Italian language in the world, which is held from 16 to 22 October 2017, the Accademia della Crusca and goWare distribute the book L'italiano al cinema, l'italiano nel cinema, edited by Giuseppe Patota and Fabio Rossi.

On the occasion of the XVII Week of the Italian language in the world, held from 16 to 22 October 2017, the Accademia della Crusca and goWare disseminate free of charge in electronic format the book L'italiano al cinema, l'italiano nel cinema, curated by Giuseppe Patota and Fabio Rossi.

The Accademia della Crusca, founded in 1583 and a publishing house since its origins, is now permanently present also in electronic publishing. The choice of the electronic format for this publication is aimed at giving the maximum diffusion of the Language Week, an initiative conceived by the Accademia della Crusca and organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Directorate General for the promotion of the country system led by the Ambassador Vincenzo De Luca.

The creation and distribution of the ebook and the printed book on the most important digital channels have been entrusted to the Florentine company goWare which makes its skills and the technological tools of a digital publishing house available to organizations and authors, to achieve the highest possible number of readers on international platforms: Apple iBookstore, Amazon Kindle Store, Google Play Books and numerous Italian bookstores.

In Italy and in the world, the Accademia della Crusca is one of the main and oldest points of reference for research on the Italian language and its promotion in the world. It supports scientific activity and the training of researchers in the field of lexicography and linguistics; spreads historical knowledge of the language and critical awareness of its evolution; collaborates with governmental and foreign institutions for plurilingualism.

Interested readers and scholars are thus able to download the contents of the book from all the platforms present in each country in a format suitable for their own device. In addition, the distribution of the volume is free during the Week of the Italian language in the world (16-22 October) and only after payment.

THE BOOK

L'italiano al cinema, l'italiano nel cinema takes account of the double relationship of give and take between cinema and the Italian language, as explained at the beginning of the first chapter: how the language of cinema enters, possibly modifying it, into common Italian ? And how does the latter pass to the cinema, possibly modified, filtered or distorted?

Even if there has not been, nor could there ever have been, any claim to completeness in the illustration of the long and complex film history of our country, the ten chapters try not to leave any significant moment of the binomial cinema-language, from its origins (Rossi, Gatta), to the glories of Italian comedy (Franceschini), from Fellini (Gargiulo) to Troisi (Sommario), from the relationship between cinema and television (Messina, Clemenzi-Gualdo), to the crucial role of dubbing (Sileo) , from the textual type of the screenplay (MeacciSerafini) to the filmic onomastics (Caffarelli).

THE CURATORS

Giuseppe Patota teaches History of the Italian language and Italian Linguistics at the University of Siena-Arezzo. In 2017 he published the volume La Quarta Corona. Pietro Bembo and the codification of written Italian (Bologna, il Mulino).

Fabio Rossi teaches Italian Linguistics at the University of Messina. He mainly deals with the language of cinema and opera. Among his most recent volumes on cinematographic language, we recall the anthology The word and the image at the dawn of Neorealism. Linguistic issues in entertainment periodicals in Italy (1936-1945), Florence, Cesati, 2016.
