The government of Fayez al-Serraj in Tripoli and Agil Saleh, president of the Parliament of Tobruk, in eastern Libya, with parallel statements today announced a cease-fire in all of Libya. The announcement comes after a few weeks of negotiations which were favored by the United Nations and pushed above all by the United States. The US may have rediscovered a political role in the match in Libya after having witnessed Russia's powerful military and political advance for inactive months, especially in the east of the country.
The president of Tripoli, Fayez al-Serraj, specified that according to his side the ceasefire will come into force "on the whole territory of Libya", and added that the truce will also include the "demilitarization of Sirte and Jufra ”, two strategic locations occupied in recent months by the forces of the general Khalifa Haftar. Russia has deployed fighter jets and other military materials to Jufra Air Base. Serraj also announces that there will be new general elections in March 2021.
Even the Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the main sponsor of General Haftar, commented favorably on this morning's agreement: “I welcome the statements by the Libyan Presidential Council and the House of Representatives for a ceasefire and an end to military operations throughout the territory of the Libya,” Sisi wrote in a tweet. “It is an important step to restore stability in the country".
