Liberalization of energy: why changing supplier is worthwhile

A study on the British energy market presented during a conference organized by the Single Buyer reveals that the price offered to customers who do not choose their supplier guarantees extra profits for operators - In Great Britain 56% of consumers have never switched supplier – The English Antitrust is ready to intervene with measures to help customers in their choice.

Liberalization of energy: why changing supplier is worthwhile

With the liberalization of the energy market at the gates ai Italian customers you will need to choose your supplier. The British experience demonstrates this, where the domestic market was liberalized 15 years ago: the topic was discussed during the conference "Evolution of the retail electricity market: the British model and prospects for Italy", organized by Sole Buyer.

During the conference it was presented for the first time outside the borders of the United Kingdom "The Energy Market Investigation: final report” by the CMA, the British antitrust, the investigation into the liberalized energy market according to which “it emerges that a price automatically offered by operators to those who do not choose ends up guaranteeing the incumbent operators extra profits (excess profits)”.

A choice, that of not changing supplier, which is the most popular: 56% of consumers, in fact, have never changed it, 34% have never considered changing and 70% of consumers of the major British operators (Big Six) is still tied to the default rate.

A problem that the Cma intends to remedy through intervention measures aimed at “helping British customers who pay much more than they should who will be advised of the most advantageous offers suited to their consumption, making it easier for them to change supplier".

“The most active consumers – hoped the charmain of the group that conducted the study Roger Witcomb – will lead to savings and will help ensure that operators make their best offers, to the benefit of competition, the market and with positive effects on end customers".
