Letta: government pact in 20 days, Renzi accelerates electoral reform

Twenty days to write the agenda for 2014. Prime Minister Enrico Letta aims to define with the majority the coalition pact for the next 12 months by the summit with the European Commission on 29 January. Meanwhile, the number one of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi, accelerates the electoral reform: within the week he wants to get a response from all the parties on the three proposals formulated, so as to arrive at the first vote in the Chamber by the end of the month.

A fundamental distance is measured precisely on the reform of the vote: for Renzi this point must remain outside the government pact, in order to be able to find an agreement that goes beyond the perimeter of the majority; for Letta, however, as well as for the Ncd leader and deputy premier Angelino Alfano, the agreement on the new electoral law must start from the majority, to then open up to the other political forces.

On the basis of these various premises, Letta and Renzi will start parallel consultations in the next few days. The Prime Minister will only meet the leaders of his majority, while the secretary of the Democratic Party will speak with all the political forces. Furthermore, to facilitate the negotiations, the Premier has already asked the four majority parties to send him written documents on the individual programmatic dossiers.

However, many are suspicious of Renzi's haste on the electoral reform front. The new law would make early voting possible again, giving the Democratic party an extra weapon to impose its program on the allies.
