The procedure for appointing Piercarlo Padoan as president of Istat has begun. This was announced by the premier, Enrico Letta, at the end of the Council of Ministers.
Padoan, current number two of the OECD, was professor of Economics at the La Sapienza University of Rome and director of the Italianieuropei Foundation. From 2001 to 2005 he held the position of executive director for Italy of the International Monetary Fund with responsibility for Greece, Portugal, San Marino, Albania and East Timor.
From 1998 to 2001 he was economic adviser to the Italian prime ministers Massimo D'Alema and Giuliano Amato. In addition, he has held advisory positions for the World Bank, the European Commission and the European Central Bank.
Padoan will take the place of Enrico Giovannini, Minister of Labor in the Letta government since April 2013.
