Work: +6 jobs in 720 months, but all fixed-term

According to Bank of Italy and the Ministry of Labour, only the freeze on layoffs saved fixed contracts - At least 270 jobs are missing due to Covid

Work: +6 jobs in 720 months, but all fixed-term

In the former six months of 2021 were created 719 thousand jobsbeyond 12% more compared to the same period of 2019, but the growth is driven entirely by precarious contracts. They write it in a joint note the Bank of Italy and the Ministry of Labour, specifying that "in the months of May and June alone, 520 fixed-term jobs were created, bringing the total number of new fixed-term contracts activated since the beginning of the year, net of terminations, to approximately 611, 245 thousand more than in 2019 (the balance had been essentially zero in the first half of 2020).

As it regards instead permanent employment contracts, the growth not only remains "extremely modest", but is also due to the freeze on layoffs in force from March 2020 to June 2021, given "the extreme weakness of permanent hiring and transformations".

As regards the business sectors, the industry continues to grow at the pre-pandemic pace (+165 seats between January and June 2021), but services are also recording a recovery. “The improvement of the epidemiological picture – reads the report – has favored private services, which, after the marked slowdown recorded in March and April, began to grow rapidly: between the beginning of May and the end of June, net of terminations, more than 500 thousand contracts were activated. The acceleration has mainly affected trade and the tourism sector”.

This dynamic “facilitated the reduction of the gender gap: for women the balance between activations and terminations, still substantially zero at the end of April, improved significantly in the following months. The number of jobs occupied by women grew by 30 from 2021 January to 290 June 2019, exceeding the pace of XNUMX, as for men".

At the territorial level, the trend of North Center "is attributable exclusively to fixed-term jobs concentrated in construction and, in recent months, also in commerce and tourism - still write Via Nazionale and the Ministry of Labor - The dynamics of Noon (over 270 thousand jobs created) also reflects the stability of permanent positions: the impact of the freeze on layoffs is in fact relatively greater in the southern regions where, before the pandemic, the duration of permanent contracts was shorter than in the central areas -northern".

On the other hand, Bank of Italy and the Ministry of Labor underline that "the gap between the contracts activated since the beginning of the pandemic and those which it is estimated would have been observed in the absence of the Covid-19 crisis" still remains very wide: we are talking about 270 thousand jobs never born.
