"La Scala makes school": choral didactics for children in the suburbs

He left on Thursday 6 June La Scala makes School. A Choir in the City, the new project promoted by Teatro alla Scala Academy e TIM Foundation under the patronage of the Municipality of Milan and with the collaboration of the Regional Scholastic Office for Lombardy, to bring teachers trained in the discipline of choral didactics to the schools of the Lombard capital, in order to stimulate and develop musical culture through the creation of children's choirs.

The initiative was presented at the Teatro alla Scala by the Mayor Giuseppe Sala, by the Superintendent of the Teatro alla Scala and President of the Academy, Alexander Pereira, by the Director General of the Fondazione TIM Loredana Grimaldi and by Maestro Bruno Casoni, Director of the Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala and the Children's Choir of the Academy.

The project is supported by the TIM Foundation through the DonaconTIM crowdfunding platform. For every euro donated to the project via the platform, until 31 July 2019, the TIM Foundation will award the Academy a contribution of the same amount, up to a maximum of 200.000 euro. Depending on the contribution, you will receive invitations to the final concert, you will be able to participate in a choral singing lesson with the teachers of the Academy or attend one of the lessons of the training course in schools.

La Scala makes School. A Choir in the City is aimed at those children who live in suburban neighborhoods and thanks to a laboratory course they can have the opportunity to learn about music and enjoy the benefits that choral practice gives.

The Teatro alla Scala, through its Academy, therefore leaves its walls and, realizing ten choral workshops during the 2019-2020 school year in as many primary schools, it makes musical culture accessible to those who would hardly approach it.

Studying choral singing creates a strong team spirit and develops a great sense of aggregation. Singing together means learning to listen to others and to listen to each other. The voice, the most natural musical instrument that exists, is an extraordinary vehicle through which to convey one's emotions and helps to improve one's expressive potential.

The project will be carried out in the following Milanese schools: Ciresola Institute (Via Padova), Arcadia Institute (Gratosoglio), Narcisi Institute (Giambellino), Via Maffucci Institute (Maciachini), Val Lagarina Institute (Quarto Oggiaro), Sorelle Agazzi Institute (Comasina), Bruno Munari Institute (San Siro – Baggio), Sottocorno Institute (Mecenate), Sandro Pertini Institute (Greco – Bicocca) and Tommaso Grossi Institute (Corvetto).

La Scala makes School. A Choir in the City foresees in a first phase, until October 2019, a course for future choir directors, ten students of the Teatro alla Scala Academy who will participate in theoretical and practical lessons in the classroom and will support the teachers of the same Academy engaged in the teaching activity of the Children's Choir.

Once the preparation process is complete, the actual teaching experience in schools will begin, with weekly meetings throughout the year, between October and May. The training course for the students will end with an event which will see the ten choirs protagonists together with the Children's Choir of the Scala Academy in a great final concert. Through the communication channels of the Academy and the TIM Foundation, it will be possible to follow the evolution of the project, with insights and videos.

In support of the crowdfunding launch de La Scala makes School. A Choir in the City, a video was made thanks to the participation of Max Pisu, Maestro Bruno Casoni, the Academy's Children's Choir and the collaboration of the director of photography Daniele Savi.

This initiative is part of the multi-year partnership between the Accademia Teatro alla Scala and the TIM Foundation, aimed at supporting young people and their talent through a series of innovative projects. With a view to synergy between the projects launched, various communication activities are envisaged, integrated with the Project Internship on the Net, whose technology will be used streaming.
