Rethinking Milan: Culture, Business, University and Technology

Milan should start rethinking its new post-covid vocation in order not to lose its central role in Italy and in Europe.

Rethinking Milan: Culture, Business, University and Technology

The recent history of Milan is the story of a city that has founded its identity on commerce and industry: Milan is the city of the National Exhibition (1881), the Universal Exposition (Sempione Tunnel, 1906), the countless Trade Fairs, the new Rho Fair and the Expo (2015).

This polarization has promoted and developed many sectors: publishing, advertising, journalism, fashion, design, light/heavy industry and many other commodities accompanied by the banking and financial system and the many services that surround us.

It is not the only Italian city (Turin for cars, Florence for fashion, etc.), but è LA city which first of all it is distinguished to represent e for to tell industrial and commercial Italy in the worldthe city thus became a metropolis.

This reality is still present today, but during this period dominated by covid, Milan is suffering more than other cities due to the absence of all those commercial moments/events, commercial and non-commercial tourism, smartworking and various lockdowns. Milan and Lombardy have suffered a stronger impact than other Italian urban contexts.

Tourists, buyers, businessmen, white-collar workers and students will come back, but not immediately: there will be a period of de-growth and then re-growth.

To ensure that the re-growth is more robust and slender, today it would be necessary rethinking the vocation the role of the metropolis on the Italian territory and in the European context, as the competition will be even more ruthless.

Milan should become more international, more pluralist, more inclusivemore open.

Milan should become younger, more progressive, more modern, more livable, more sustainable.

Milan should always be the pole relationships in the broadest possible sense (research and development, creativity, innovation, trade, etc.).

The thematic areas (in addition to those mentioned above) in which to invest more could be enlarged  to the culture,  to the business creation, atuniversity and to technology.

The spirit should be one of respect for tradition and memory, but the strategic focus should be innovation, contemporaneity, leadership.

Already today the elements are almost all available. You have to order them and synchronize them by relating them to a large metropolitan project and with an ultra-ten-year forward momentum that will materialize the new Milan by 2030.

The next mayor of Milan, together with his council, will have to have a great vision, as he will be mainly called upon to plan and build this great plan that is vital for the city and for the rest of Italy, but also for Europe.

Lucio Dalla – Milan (1979)

Milan close to Europe
Milan what banks what changes
Milan open legs

Milan laughing and having fun
Milan at the theatre
A bullfighter ole
Milan that when it cries

Really crying
Milan Carabinieri Police
They look serene
Close your eyes and fly away

Milan at your fingertips
He asks you a question in German
And he answers you in Sicilian
Then Milan and Benfica

Milan what a struggle
Milan always ready for Christmas
Who cries when he passes
And it feels bad

Milan evil gaze of God
Sugar and tar
Milan every time
That I have to come

You hit me in the stomach
You make me die
Milan without luck
Bring me with you

Under the ground or on the moon
Milan three million
Breath of one lung only
Milan that like a bird

They shoot him
But it also takes off again
Milan rained from the sky
Between life and death

Continue your mystery
Milan three million
Breath of one lung only
That like a bird

They shoot him
But it also takes off again
Milan far from heaven
Between life and death
Continue your mystery

All the Best!
