Istat: tax burden and deficit fall in the first quarter

According to the calculations of the Institute of Statistics, between January and March the tax burden was equal to 38,5%, resulting in a decrease of 0,3 percentage points compared to the same period last year – As for the deficit, it was equal to 6,6% of GDP, against 7,3% last year.

Italy closed the first quarter of 2014 with a declining tax burden and public deficit. it is certified byIstat, specifying that in the same period the Treasury also increased its tax revenues.

In detail, according to calculations by the Institute of Statistics, between January and March the tax burden it was equal to 38,5%, resulting in a decrease of 0,3 percentage points compared to the same period last year. 

Le revenue totals, on the other hand, increased by 0,4% on an annual basis: "This trend - writes Istat - was determined, in particular, by the 0,3% increase in current revenues, which they recorded compared to the first quarter of 2013 an increase of 0,3%, reflecting an increase of 3,2% in indirect taxes, driven by the dynamics of the VAT, and of 4,9% in other current receipts, combined with reductions of 2% in direct taxes and of 2,2% of social contributions".

As for the deficit, in the first quarter of 2014 the net debt of the Public Administrations (raw data) was equal to 6,6% of the gross domestic product. In the corresponding quarter of the previous year it was equal to 7,3%.
