“Why so much damage from a 4.0 magnitude earthquake? There is a discussion of the specificity of the island of Ischia which is in volcanic area. But what I was able to see today is that many buildings are made with shoddy materials that do not comply with current legislation, which is why some buildings have collapsed or been damaged". He explains it Angelo Borrelli, head of the Civil Protection, at the press conference in Casamicciola.
The day after the earthquake in Ischia, where two people died, it was time for analyzes and accusations against unauthorized use and responsibility for the construction of collapsed buildings. The debate was launched, while another shock hit the island of Campania during the night, even milder than the one two days ago and this time without damage but with great fear, is the Civil Protection, which also provided the official balance of the displaced persons: there are two thousand displaced persons in Casamicciola and another 600 in Lacco Ameno. The number was announced by the head of the civil protection department, Angelo Borrelli who yesterday met with the island's mayors to take stock of the situation.
Excluding the setting up of tent cities, for the reception of the displaced people it is hoped to resort to the various accommodation facilities present on the green island. A state of emergency will be declared and a Commissioner will be appointed. “This morning we had estimated a pool of possible displaced persons, based on the population. At the moment there is a need in the hotels of around 200 people, a number that could grow”, explains Angelo Borrelli.
In the meantime, the preliminary investigations have already begun, following which the existence of any elements for the opening of a file will be assessed. This is what has been learned from sources in the Naples prosecutor's office regarding the probable launch of an investigation into the damage caused by the earthquake that occurred yesterday evening on the island of Ischia. In particular, the prosecutor awaits the reports of the firefighters engaged in the rescue work since yesterday evening. The technical surveys will be used to evaluate the state of the buildings and any non-adoption of anti-seismic standards. Investigators are also examining the cases of illegal building into which the prosecutor has already conducted numerous investigations. The hypothesis of a crime hypothesized in the event of responsibility being identified would be culpable disaster.
