Iraq, EU: arms ok for besieged Kurds

The foreign ministers of the European Union, meeting today in Brussels for an extraordinary summit on the ongoing geopolitical crises, agree on the need to arm the Kurds besieged by jihadists in Iraq. The response to the Kurds' requests "will be made in accordance with the national capacities and laws of the member states and with the consent of the Iraqi national authorities", reads the conclusions of the Council of Foreign Ministers. The EU will also consider how to prevent the Islamic State (ISIS) from benefiting from the sale of oil and condemns the financial supporters of ISIS, who contravene UN resolutions.

The European Union "welcomes the fact that some countries will respond to requests for arms received from the Kurds" besieged by jihadists in Iraq. This was stated by the German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, after the urgent meeting with the other 27 European colleagues in Brussels. The ministers, Steinmeier added, discussed at length the type of support to be ensured for the Kurdish forces.
