Industry, Istat: turnover -1,7% in May, orders +4,1%

According to the latest Istat data, the turnover numbers are negative on a monthly basis, but continue to record significant growth compared to 2010, with +10,8% - In the period March-May the index grew by 3,8% compared to the previous three months.

In a nightmare period for the markets, even the latest numbers of the Italian industry disappoint. According to data released by Istat, in May turnover fell by 1,7% compared to the previous month. The decrease is the result of a drop of 2,9% on the domestic market and an increase of 0,9% on the foreign market.

In any case, on a trend basis the performance remains positive, with an increase of 10,8%. In the March-May period, the index grew by 3,8% compared to the previous three months. The sectors in which the greatest increases in turnover are recorded compared to May 2010 are those of the manufacture of chemical products (+38,3%) and mining activities (+18,0%).

Good news comes from orders, which show an economic increase of 4,1%. The figure derives from the 0,8% drop in domestic orders and the parallel 12,2% increase in foreign orders. On a trend level, the greatest growth regards its sectors in particular: the manufacture of machinery and equipment nec (+48,5%) and the manufacture of chemical products (+42,5%).
