The European Parliament has approved the appointment of Draghi as president of the ECB

The go-ahead from the European Council could arrive this evening, after which only the formalization of the Ecofin will be required. Still uncertainty about the location of Lorenzo Bini Smaghi

The European Parliament has approved the appointment of Draghi as president of the ECB

The European Parliament has given a favorable opinion on the appointment of Mario Draghi as president of the European Central Bank. Now the word passes to the European leaders meeting today and tomorrow in Brussels. Draghi's nomination by the European Council should arrive as early as tonight. The decision will then be formalized on 11 July at the Ecofin headquarters, by the 27 finance ministers of the EU. The current governor of Bank of Italy will take over the seat occupied so far by Jean-Claude Trichet on November 1st. The only small margin of uncertainty remains linked to the French position. Paris has so far given its full support to the appointment of Draghi, but is asking for a step back by Lorenzo Bini Smaghi from the board of the ECB, to give way to a French representative. A request made to Bini Smaghi also by the Italian government.
