To reduce dependence on Russian gas, Europe focuses on green hydrogen, i.e. the one produced without the use of fossil fuels. He announced it Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, today anticipating some points of the new "REPowerEU" plan that will be presented tomorrow.

"Green hydrogen is essential to end Europe's dependence on an unreliable and dangerous energy supplier like Russia," said the number one EU executive in a video message sent to the Central European Hydrogen Technology Forum "H2Poland" underway in Poznan, Poland.

Green hydrogen: targets doubled by 2030

“That is why – he added – in the new REPowerEU plan we have doubled our goal for 2030 to produce 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen every year in the EU. And we will also import another 10 million tons from abroad: like this we will be able to replace up to 50 billion cubic meters of imported Russian gas a year".

On May 6, in Barcelona, ​​the president of the Commission spoke for the first time about the goal of replacing one third of the gas imported from Russia with hydrogen for the EU's energy needs, i.e. 50 billion cubic meters per year out of a total of about 150 billion cubic metres.

Towards an integrated hydrogen and gas infrastructure

“Tomorrow the Commission will adopt a regulatory package for green hydrogen – said Von der Leyen – Therefore, the main regulatory parameters for the completion of an integrated gas and hydrogen infrastructure, including port and storage infrastructure. With the current increase in gas prices, green hydrogen can already be cheaper than gray hydrogen. Our goal is bring the cost below 1,8 euros per kilo by 2030".
