Greece, Varoufakis attacked by anti-state activists

Yanis Varoufakis ends up in the crosshairs ofanti-state activists“. Yesterday evening, in fact, the Greek finance minister, already in the eye of the storm after the harsh criticisms received from the European Union and the Eurogroup and after the downsizing of his role in the negotiations, was attacked together with his wife while having dinner in a restaurant in the neighborhood of Exarchia, anarchist enclave of Athens.

"A group of people with their faces covered - said Varoufakis himself - came towards us throwing glass objects at us that did not hit us, asking us to leave their territory". The minister then clarified that no one was injured: "Their goal was not to hurt us because if they wanted they had the numbers and the way to do it".

After leaving the club Varoufakis had a new face to face with the activists, who continued to threaten him from a distance: "I turned off the bike and went to talk to the 5-6 angriest of them. After 15 minutes of very tense but non-violent dialogue, the situation calmed down and we left on the bike undisturbed".

“It was not an organized episode – continued the minister – nor a piece of the policy of degradation towards me in progress these days. But I care to say one thing: however much fear and disgust the use of violence causes, the response to the aggressiveness of these people can be neither retreat nor the use of repression”.
