Greece is trying to reassure tourists: the blockade of capital announced yesterday by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is not valid for them. This means that ATMs and credit cards issued on foreign banks will continue to function normally and will not be subject to the limitation on cash withdrawals imposed on Greek credit institutions, which instead will not be able to grant more than 60 euros in cash per day (only the withdrawal of pensions is not part of the withdrawals affected by this threshold).
The decision to guarantee foreigners a different treatment is intended not to penalize the tourism sector – which alone is worth 18% of GDP – at the start of a vital season for many Greek towns.
In order not to penalize the Greeks, the government has decided to make public transport free for everyone for the week ahead of the referendum.
