Greece, Monti-Merkel-Papademos: confident about an agreement at the Eurogroup on Monday

“The Prime Minister Mario Monti had a call with the chancellor Angela Merkel and the Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos“. This is what we read in a press release from Palazzo Chigi. “At the end of this detailed and constructive conversation – continues the press release -, the three participants declared that they are confident that an agreement on Greece will be reached on Monday in the Eurogroup”.

The government refers to the new tranche of international aid worth 130 billion euros which should be destined for Athens. The figure will allow the Greek country to repay the 14,5 billion bonds maturing on March 20, thus avoiding an uncontrolled default. The go-ahead from the Eurogroup for the package was expected last Wednesday, but it was postponed pending further political reassurances and new commitments from Greece to rake in another 325 million euros over the year.

The Greece dossier was to be at the center of the summit scheduled for this morning at Palazzo Chigi between Mario Monti and Angela Merkel. However, the meeting was canceled by the chancellor, who is facing a serious internal crisis after the scandal which forced the the President of the German Republic resigns, Christian Wulff.
