Government, progress on the program but Di Maio remains unknown

The negotiation between the designated premier Giuseppe Conte and the parliamentary group leaders of the Democratic Party and the Five Stars on the government program has made "steps forward" but the general political issue remains, namely the unknown Di Maio who, with his ultimatum yesterday, made to understand that he does not want to back down in his claim to remain deputy prime minister, despite the fact that the political scenario has completely changed compared to before.

During the morning, Prime Minister Conte suddenly went to the Quirinale to confer with the President of the Republic, Giuseppe Mattarella, on the state of the negotiations, but the unscheduled had led to fears that he might give up his job due to the difficulties that arose yesterday, a hypothesis promptly denial.

Encouraging words were pronounced, after the summit in Palazzo Chigi, by the group leaders of the Democratic Party and the Five Stars on the progress of the talks for the definition of the programme. But the president of the senators of the Democratic Party, Andrea Marcucci, was equally clear in underlining that, beyond the programme, a "general political clarification" is needed on the prospects and governance of the Pd-Cinque Stelle alliance.

After accepting Conte's candidacy for prime minister, expressed by the Five Stars, the Democratic Party has no intention of endorsing Di Maio's confirmation as deputy prime minister, both because the grillino is one of the main symbols of the failed political experience of government with the League, and because the balance of the new government team would be too biased in favor of the Five Stars.

Thus we return to the starting point: three deputy prime ministers (two from the Democratic Party and one from the M5S), two (PD and Five Stars), only one (PD) or none (as Conte would prefer)? The rebus remains on the table and in the next few hours it will be understood whether it can be dissolved and whether the Pd-Five Star government can really be born or whether the risk of new elections returns to hover on the political scene. There is talk of a new summit between Conte, Zingaretti and Di Maio which should be held on Sunday and in view of which the leader of the Five Stars presided over a meeting of the main Grillini exponents this afternoon. If they are roses, they will bloom
