Government: Casellati fails, Fico tries on Monday

Di Maio proposes to Forza Italia to limit itself to giving external support to the centre-right-M5S government but Berlusconi refuses - On Monday Mattarella will appoint the Speaker of the Chamber to attempt an M5S-Pd government

Government: Casellati fails, Fico tries on Monday

The mission of Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati has already failed. The President of the Senate – who received yesterday from the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, the task of definitively verifying the possibility of creating a government supported by the center-right and M5S – has failed to overcome the stalemate already verified by the Quirinale in recent weeks. The veto of the 5 Star Movement on Silvio Berlusconi still weighs.

The grillino leader, Luigi Di Maio, sought a compromise by proposing to form the League a majority with the external support of Forza Italia, which would therefore have been highly marginalised. However, Berlusconi rebelled and the Northern League's number one, Matteo Salvini, returned the proposal to the sender, confirming that he did not want to break the coalition.

Alberti Casellati still has 24 hours to continue with the consultations before returning to Colle, but it is now clear that nothing can change on the center-right side of the 5 Stars.

"Yes, there are some signs of news from the M5S, we trust today in what Di Maio will say", said Salvini as he left Palazzo Giustiniani. “Yesterday we left here with slaps, if today we leave with smiles, half of the work is done, we'll do the rest next week. Let's hope that today is the right day: we trust that we can create a government of those who won the elections. If the vetoes fall, if the 'no's fall, we can start working”.

At this point, also given the timing indicated by the leader of the League, it is probable that Mattarella will entrust on Monday a new exploratory mandate: this time to the Speaker of the Chamber, the grillino Roberto Fico, which will probably also have to seek an agreement on the opposite political arc, probing the possibility of building a majority between M5S, Pd and perhaps even Leu.

And it is not said that, over time, dem isolationism cannot be undermined. Indeed, it seems that the party does not lack exponents eager to start negotiations with the 5 Stars, even if yesterday evening the Renzians - from Delrio to Rosato - ruled out an agreement with MS5, preferring to certify the complete failure of the center-right and the Five Stars to create a government 45 days after the elections to possibly take the field later if Mattarella entrusts the task to a non-partisan president.

The grillini, for their part, continue to leave an open door: "" We - said the group leader in the Chamber Danilo Toninelli - speak only of the League because the president Mattarella has given Casellati a specific mandate but we are not talking to the Pd to which we renew the proposal to sit down at a table and write a government contract. I hope that at the request of the President of the Republic they will take a step forward. If the Democratic Party wants to carry out a serious program, we are there, we have the basic income and they have the inclusion income, we will find a middle ground and fight poverty ".
