How and when reality is transformed and disseminated in a non-objective way in times of war
How to debunk fake news? On the occasion of World press freedom day, journalists and activists Ukrainians, Belarusians e succeeded they will tell a year of military invasion, without the filter of censorship and beyond the language of propaganda, against the mystification of reality.
The meeting point is 3st May from 10,30, to Garden of the Righteous in Milan (via Cimabue, metro QT8), the first of over 200 in the world, created by the Gariwo Foundation by Gabriele Nissim, Pietro Kuciukian, Ulianova Radice and Anna Maria Samuelli.
At the center of the story there will be people and places of war, through the testimony of journalist Ilia Krasilshchik and the exposure of photographer and artist Danila Tkachenko. The Russian state has issued international arrest warrants on both. Krasilshchik, former co-founder of Meduza, is director of Helpdesk.media, an editorial startup that helps Russian citizens avoid conscription and Ukrainians to survive during the conflict. He does it by debunking fake news, providing practical information to those under the bombs and gathering first-hand information from dissidents and fleeing citizens.
An exercise in immersive imagination
Participants in the event will be asked to do an exercise immersive imagination. Throughout the day, in fact, the Garden of the Righteous in Milan will become a sort of theater of war: through mega panels the most devastating scenarios of the conflict in Ukraine will be re-proposed. The gaze is that of the Ukrainian photojournalists trapped in the cities besieged by the Kremlin. At their side, there will be the presence of diaspora community Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian, united for the occasion with the same message of demand for democracy, justice and truth.
An exhibition to reverse course
The exhibition set up in the Garden of the Righteous, which is entitled "Inversion", is conceived and curated by the Russian performer and photographer Tkachenko himself. The aim of the exhibition is to draw public attention to Russia's military aggression against Ukraine and to call on European citizens to help Ukraine and oppose the military aggression. THE Ukrainian photographers involved are: Maxim Dondyuk, Evgeny Maloletka, Alexey Furman, Svyatoslav Shivchenko, Yulia Ovsyannikova, Vasily Maximov, as well as French Laurence Geai and Mexican Narciso Contreras.
"With images of war, the testimonies of dissidents and the participation of the Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian communities of Milan, the Garden of the Righteous - which houses a large number of trees, memorial stones and plaques dedicated to journalists and political dissidents - it becomes the stage for a political and cultural declaration which considers freedom of expression, justice and democratic values as the cornerstones of any process of international diplomacy” says a statement from the organisation. “Russian journalists and intellectuals will therefore meet together with the Ukrainian resistants and their Italian colleagues in the name of the same values. After all, the Garden itself stands on Monte Stella, built on the rubble of the Second World War and a symbol of life and rebirth, of new relationships between people and communities. After the "zero stage" in Milan, Inversione will be presented again, over the next few months, in the main European cities.
