Gabrielli: “No fly zone over Rome. We will evaluate whether to shoot down drones, ultralights and aircraft"

The sky over Rome will be a "no fly zone" for the entire duration of the Jubilee. From 8 December 2015 to 20 November 2016 the no fly zone will be extended throughout the capital. In the event that drones, ultralights or unauthorized aircraft are intercepted, the killing will be evaluated to ensure the safety of the city.

These are the most striking statements released this morning since prefect Franco Gabrielli: “With the appointed authorities, Enac and Enav - Gabrielli explained- the scope of the so-called no-fly zone has been expanded. The so-called Notam, i.e. the communication that is made to all those who use the airspace, indicates that there are some areas of the capital, practically throughout the city, which are forbidden to fly for the entire period of the Jubilee".

Despite this, the prefect underlined how the decision to ban airspace over Rome has “little impact on those with a negative intention. So it's not like we are calm with the issuance of the Notam”. For this reason, the Prefecture has deemed it appropriate to warn that should one of these aircraft be intercepted, be it a drone or an ultralight, in certain situations for which we deem the context worthy of particular attention, these ininterference will also be managed with the hypothesis of abatement, obviously when conditions favor it”. The same will apply to the aircraft which will be considered as a threat to the security of the city. The tightening of the measures will go hand in hand with the strengthening of the control systems. In particular, the prefect Gabrielli explained that "we are strengthening the interception system, i.e. a radar system that allows us to verify the presence of these unauthorized aircraft in a preventive manner, with the limits that are typical of technologies because below a certain altitude even ground radars can't see."

Speaking of the Jubilee, Gabrielli asked for the cooperation of the Islamic communities, considered the first victims of the terrorists who attacked Rome and threaten the security of the whole of Europe: "they are criminals who want to change our lives and their first victims are the Muslims, whom I ask to collaborate and who cannot but be at the alongside those who fight these crimes”. Gabrielli stressed the safety line during the presentation of the 'Roma per il Giubileo' logo. "I expect Islamic communities to take a position 'no ifs, ands or buts'." "We have defeated internal terrorism not only with the military and special laws, but because many have understood that those were not comrades who were wrong".

For the threats made against the capital, the prefect declared: "I believe that the country and Rome are and could be the object of an indefinite threat in many respects, as the Parisian experience has taught us", but "the citizens must continue to live their lives, while the institutions must implement a security framework in a situation where zero risk does not exist”. "There is an anti-terrorism planning system that takes into consideration every possible situation", the prefect then assured. "We will have messages, alarms and solicitations in industrial quantities, because they also respond to the interests of those who want to create confusion and aim for even more sophisticated objectives".
