Sharp fall in the French consumer confidence index, to a five-year low. In May the indicator fell to 79 from 83 in the month of April, the lowest level since the summer of 2008.

The concerns of French consumers, reports Insee, the transalpine statistical institute, concern the prospects of their financial situation in a country in recession.
