Fiat wants Opel, Marchionne tries again

The CEO of Lingotto is allegedly preparing a new proposal to make to the German car manufacturer – But General Motors must abandon any attempt to reorganize Opel – For Fiat Industrial, the merger with the US subsidiary CNH has been postponed to 2013, but after the merger the new company will remain listed on Piazza Affari.

Fiat wants Opel, Marchionne tries again

The disappointment Opel received in 2009 has not yet been digested by Marchionne. For this reason it would seem, as reported by Il Sole 24ore, that the CEO of Fiat is ready to start a new negotiation with General Motors to buy the German car manufacturer. The manager's objective is to obtain Opel practically at no cost, in a similar way to what happened with the first share of Chrysler.

However, compared to 2009, the situation has changed. Now General Motors has signed a strategic alliance with the French company PSA Pegeot, of which it has acquired 7%.

The project has not yet been formally submitted to General Motors, although Marchionne is in regular contact with number one Dan Akerson. The premise for this to be possible is a dissolution of relations between the Americans and the Germans on one side and the French on the other, but above all it is necessary that General Motors abandons attempts to restore Opel.

This morning in Piazza Affari, the Fiat share lost 1,04% to 4,396 euros per share. While Fiat Industrial is slightly positive (+0,13%) after the news that, even after the merger with the American subsidiary Cnh – which according to rumors it seems will be postponed to 2013 -, the new holding company, incorporated under Dutch law, will remain listed at Milan. A few months ago, however, it was learned that she would not have remained in Piazza Affari.
