Fed, NYT: Powell will be the new president

He is a moderate Republican, a supporter of the Yellen line in monetary policy, and has sat on the board of the US Central Bank since 2012 - NYT sources define him as a "safe" choice for US President Donald Trump.

According to the New York Times, Jerome Powell will be the next governor of the Federal Reserve. The indiscretion of the American newspaper, which cites two sources, adds to other press rumors that go in the same direction.

Powell is a moderate Republican, a supporter of the Yellen line in monetary policy, and has sat on the board of the US central bank since 2012. NYT sources call him a "safe" choice for US President Donald Trump.

The mandate Barack Obama gave to Janet Yellen in 2014 will expire in February 2018. By choosing Powell, Trump would break a long tradition whereby the Fed chairman who completed his first term is confirmed for a second.

The last three governors were confirmed by presidents who belonged to the opposite party to that of their appointees.
