Maire Tecnimontthrough the subsidiary Next Chem, initials with Italian steelworks an agreement for a feasibility study on the decarbonisation of the former Ilva. In particular, the analysis will concern the possible use in the Taranto steelworks of circular gas (syngas). It is a product obtained with the technology of chemical recycling of NextChem, “based on the recovery of carbon and hydrogen contained in plastic and dry waste through a partial oxidation process”, reads a note.

Maire Tecnimont points out that “NextChem's technology makes it possible to obtain a circular gas that can be used both in the refining processes and in the steel production cycle, replacing coal dust in a blast furnace or natural gas in direct reduction, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions”.

The feasibility study "will focus on the environmental benefits deriving from the use of circular gas in the steel plant, as well as from the valorisation of the steel plant's tail gases - continues the note - Both solutions could contribute to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the steel production cycle".

Secondo Pier Roberto Folgiero, managing director of Maire Tecnimont and NextChem, “the project can offer a concrete solution for the decarbonisation of the steel production and processing cycle. NextChem's technology, already ready for construction, can make a great contribution to the green conversion of traditional industrial sites".

Lucia Morselli, CEO of Acciaierie d'Italia, added: “Contributing to the energy transition is the precise responsibility of every company. NextChem's circular gas technology is of interest to Acciaierie d'Italia because, once verified, it goes in the direction of decarbonising our plants”.
