The president of the Eurogroup Jeroen Dijsselbloem spoke a little while ago on the stability pact. Yes to flexibility regarding real reforms that must not only be presented and promised, but implemented. Only in this case can countries be given more time to achieve the set objectives and evaluate possible deviations.

Eurogroup (Dijsselbloem): yes to flexibility on the stability pact, but real reforms first

The debate that makes austerity and flexibility the leitmotif of the speech on the turning point that Renzi has promised to give to Brussels and Strasbourg is immediately topical again. Just before the meeting of the Eurogroup, its president Jeroen Dijsselbloem it intervenes by opening up spaces of flexibility, but binding them within precise limits.

“There is sufficient flexibility in the stability pact but only on the basis of real reforms: these reforms must be launched, implemented, not just promised, they must be included in the budget and have a real positive impact on the public budget. […] Only under these conditions can countries be given more time” to achieve the objectives and evaluate “how much is the deviation from these objectives” – explained Dijsselbloem.

Renzi it will therefore have adequate room for maneuver and relative freedom from the European constraints of the fiscal compact and the stability pact, only if the agreements on the reforms hold. If on the one hand the front with Forza Italia seems to be holding, the premature failure of the dialogue with the 5 Stars could create some unexpected difficulties.
