Energy: EU procedure against Italy

Brussels – The European Commission has opened a infringement procedure against Italy for "having not yet communicated that it has fully transposed the energy labeling directive into its national law". The Brussels Executive therefore gives our country two months to send this communication before taking measures. In fact, the Commission informs the EU, if in two months the Italian position is not clarified, the Commission itself will be able to appeal to the Court of Justice.

Italy, they recall from Brussels, had been placed in formal notice in July, with a letter sent to request the missing communication. Now comes the aut aut: either measures are taken to protect the consumer or sanctions are triggered. Energy labeling "plays an important role", recalls the Commission in the reasoning explaining the opening of the infringement procedure. By providing consumers with comparative information on energy consumption, the label helps guide citizens' market choices and "encourages producers to develop products characterized by a good degree of energy efficiency". But the energy label, concludes the EU Commission, "can also prove useful for other subjects, such as private companies in their promotional activities".
