Enel, to Starace appointed to the board of directors of the UN Global Compact

The United Nations has announced that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Francesco Starace, Chief Executive Officer of the Enel Group in Board of Directors of the United Nations Global Compact. Francesco Starace is the first representative of an Italian company to be awarded this role.

The Global Compact is the world's largest initiative for corporate sustainability, and the Board represents the keystone of its governance structure, as it helps to define the strategy and policies as well as provide advice on all issues of interest to the Global Compact, in particular on sustainability. The LEAD initiative is one of the main activities of the Global Compact and Enel is among the six global companies that manage the "Board" program, aimed at strengthening the role of the Boards of Directors in favor of integrating sustainability issues into corporate strategies .

In the letter of appointment, the Secretary General welcomed Francesco Starace in "this joint commitment aimed at strengthening and guiding the United Nations Global Compact", and expressed the willingness to promote together "within the Council, a vision of a global, sustainable and inclusive economy.”

Francesco Starace commented: “I am honored to be appointed Secretary-General and look forward to joining this group of leaders to advance global sustainability and contribute to the important work of the United Nations in this field. I am also proud of the recognition that this appointment represents for Enel by an international institution at the level of the United Nations. Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of our industrial strategy, and it is the most important issue we are confronted with at the sector level. The challenge is to give a convincing and wide-ranging answer”.
