Unemployment stable in the OECD area: in the Eurozone only Italy is worsening

According to the OECD, unemployment is stable both in the member countries of the organization (7,2% in October) and in the euro area, with the exception of Italy – in the USA and Canada it has dropped to 2008 levels.

In the OECD area, the unemployment rate remained stable at 7,2% in October, with 43,8 million people out of work, six million less than the peak reached in April 2010, but still 9,3 million more than July 2008. The unemployment rate was also stable in the Eurozone at 11,5%.

Within the Eurozone, unemployment fell mainly in Ireland (-0,2 percentage points to 10,9%) and Slovenia (-0,2 points to 8,8%), while it increased in Italy (by 0,3 points to 13,2%) and remained stable elsewhere. In Canada, the unemployment rate fell 0,3 percentage points to 6,5%, the lowest level since November 2008. Down 0,1 points in both the US (third consecutive decline to 5,8%, the lowest level since July 2008) and Japan (at 3,5%).

As regards young people (15-24 years), the unemployment rate in the OECD area decreased by 0,4 percentage points to 14,7% in October, 2,6 points below the peak of October 2009. Youth unemployment remains exceptionally high in Greece (49,3%), Spain (53,8%), Italy (43,3%), Portugal (33,3%).
