Decent salary. That is how Michelin, the historic French tire manufacturer, has defined the introduction of a remuneration equivalent to “living wage” for a family of 4. Also announced was the arrival of a "universal social protection basis'. The changes will apply to all 132.000 group employees in France and around the world.
What is decent salary
The Michelin group starts from a consideration: “the French minimum wage is insufficient”. On this basis, the company has decided to guarantee its employees a salary equivalent to the living wage, as defined by the United Nations Global Compact. A minimum wage that will allow every worker to “make up for the essential needs” of a family of four (nutrition, transport, education, healthcare costs) but also to accumulate savings and purchase consumer goods.
“It is a logical commitment with respect to all the group's employees,” Michelin's CEO explained to the France Presse agency, Florent Menegaux, adding that the employees “consecrate time to develop and develop the company and we, in exchange, give them the means at least for a family of four people – two parents and two children – so that a single salary allows them to provide accommodation, food, but also entertainment, a bit of savings...".
How much is a decent salary?
The living wage is not the same everywhere, on the contrary. In a country like France, the amount of this decent salary varies from place to place. In Paris, for example, it is 39.638 euros gross per year, in the headquarters of Clermont-Ferrand, a much less expensive town than the capital, the price drops to 25.356 euros. “The minimum wage in France is not sufficient in the eyes of Michelin to meet what we consider a decent wage,” underlines Ménégaux quoted by the French pressAnd. Italian salaries
Michelin did not provide data onItaly, where the company has approximately 3.200 employees. According to estimates provided by Florianne Viala, the group's remuneration director, “On average, the decent wage represents between 1,5 and 3 times the minimum wage” of the country or sector concerned. In the case of the rubber and plastic sector, in Italy the minimum wage amounts to approximately 1.530 euros. According to Viala, the living wage for Michelin employees should therefore be between 2.300 and 4.500 euros.
Universal social protection
To the decent salary will be added a'universal social protection basis', which consists of a maternity leave of at least 14 weeks and a paternity leave four weeks paid at 100%. Not only that, in case of death of an employee of the group, the family will be paid an allowance ""equal to at least one year's real salary and a school pension for the children until the end of high school and regardless of the employee's seniority". Finally, "health coverage will be guaranteed which covers not only hospitalization or emergencies but also maternity care, visits and outpatient care".
