Covid and recovery: where are we? The Hands respond

At what point has the pandemic night descended on the economy? And the recovery from the most violent recession ever experienced in modern times of peace (a tsunami we baptized thirteen months ago)? How is the recovery spreading across countries and across sectors? And is there a link between one and the other? What does performance in different areas of the world depend on? Using some qualitative indicators in an innovative and slightly audacious way, the hands of the economy give a non-obvious and different answer compared to the reading that is often heard in the common narrative.

Le Lancet they are the monthly analysis column of the economic situation which for a quarter of a century has been edited by Fabrizio Galimberti and Luca Paolazzi, and which boasts numerous attempts at imitation, almost as many as those of the Puzzle Week. In fact, understanding economic performance is often as difficult as deciphering and solving a puzzle. Composed of many elements, among which there are, in addition to all the real variables (production indices, retail sales, employment, exports, imports, and so on and so forth) also inflation, interest rates, monetary quantities, currencies, raw materials, stock exchanges.

With the structural transformations in the background, but kept very present in the editorial staff. Added to all this are the meta-economic phenomena, which affect trust and behaviour, as the Covid-19 virus has sadly demonstrated to us again. Therefore the Lancette are presented as a polyptych, made up of four articles: the summary, the part on the real economy, the one on inflation and, dulcis in fundo, the piece dedicated to rates, currencies and stock exchanges. From tomorrow only on FIRSTonline the hands of April 2021.
