In April 2020, as reported by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy was 19,9 billion kWh, down by 17,2% compared to the same month in 2019. This value was obtained with a working day in more (21 against 20) and an average monthly temperature substantially in line with April last year. The reduction in consumption recorded is affected by the impact of the measures introduced to deal with the health emergency from Covid-19. The seasonally adjusted figure corrected for calendar and temperature effects brings the variation to -18,2%.

The question of first quarter of 2020 decreased by 7,4% compared to the corresponding period of 2019. In adjusted terms, the change is equal to -8,4%. At a territorial level, the April 2020 trend was negative everywhere: -20,3% in the North, -16% in the Center and -11,2% in the South. In economic terms, the seasonally adjusted value adjusted for calendar and temperature of the electricity required in April 2020 recorded a negative change (-7,5%) compared to the previous month (March 2020).

In April 2020 the demand for electricity was 95,9% satisfied with domestic production and for the remainder (4,1%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. Production from renewable sources covered 47% of demand, an increase compared to the same period of 2019 (36%). In detail, net national production (19,4 billion kWh) was down (-10,8%) compared to April 2019. Sources of geothermal (+1,1%), hydroelectric (+10,4 .26,9%) and photovoltaic (+14,3%); wind (-21,4%) and thermoelectric (-XNUMX%) sources were down.
