Le women they still have a minor role in the management of Italian listed companies. As emerges from a recent Consob report, at the end of 2021 they had a woman in the position of managing director only 16 of the 407 companies represented in Piazza Affari, representing just over 2% of the total market value. There chair of president, however, was occupied by a woman only in 30 cases (even if of greater weight, as they represent 20,7% of the total capitalization). In three out of four cases, the role covered by women is that of independent director.

In detail, Consob continues in the 2021 report on the governance of listed companies, at the end of last year 41% of directorships is exercised by a woman: this figure represents the all-time high observed on the Italian market, but was obtained thanks to the regulations on gender quotas.

“The entry of women – writes the Commission – has contributed to modify the characteristics of the members of the administrative boards, lowering the average age, raising the number of graduates and increasing the diversification of professional profiles”.

Finally, in 30% of cases women are holders of more than one administrative position (interlockers), a circumstance that occurs more frequently than men. The figure, however, shows a decrease compared to the previous year and to the maximum reached in 2019 (34,9% of women interlockers) following a significant growth in the period 2013-2018.
