Municipal: M5S collapses, Genoa on the right, Palermo on the left

Sensational debacle in yesterday's municipal elections of the 5 Star Movement, out of the ballots in all the regional capitals. "M5S loses because it doesn't know how to govern" commented the former prime minister and secretary of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi, who will however have to make new alliances as soon as possible (with an eye in the first place on the former mayor of Milan, Pisapia) if he wants , in view of the future political elections, face the evident recovery of the united centre-right.

In fact, the center-right won the first round in Genoa with a list that unites Forza Italia and the Lega and which candidates Marco Bucci (38,6%) for mayor: the ballot will be with Crivello (34%) from the center-left. M5S stops at 18%.

In Palermo, on the other hand, the outgoing mayor Luca Orlando was immediately elected for the fifth time, collecting 42% (in Sicily the quorum for direct elections without going through the ballot is 40%, not 50%) and who is supported by the centre-left, which prevailed over the centre-right (35%) and even more over the M5S candidate (16%). “Ours is a point of reference for the whole country,” commented Orlando.

Grillini also out of the ballots in L'Aquila, where Di Benedetto of the centre-left (47%) is ahead of Biondi (33%) of the centre-right with M5S at 5% and in Catanzaro, where instead Abramo (37,4%) of the centre-right is largely ahead of Ciconte (30%) of the centre-left and the Five Stars stop at 5%.

The grillini's defeat was also bitter in Parma, where the outgoing and former M5S mayor Pizzarotti (34,9%) is in the lead and will go to the ballot with Scarpa (32,5%) of the centre-left.

Head to head in Taranto with the centre-right ahead of the centre-left and in Verona where the centre-right prevails with Sboarina (29%) who will go to the ballot with Bisinella (Tosi list).

The centre-right also prevailed in Como, Monza, Piacenza, Asti, La Spezia, Frosinone, Rieti, Lecce. The centre-left wins in Cuneo, Alessandria, Lodi.

Naturally the ballots - which will be held between two Sundays - can reserve surprises and the grillini can tip the balance to one side or the other, but the political meaning of the municipal elections seems clear and sees the duel prevail throughout Italy between centre-right and centre-left and between Forza Italia and Pd. But he also says that, if it unites as in Genoa, the center-right wins even if getting Berlusconi and Salvini to agree in the general elections won't be easy. At this point Renzi's Democratic Party will have to take countermeasures if it doesn't want to resign itself to defeat: the splendid isolation no longer pays and the time to search for alliances is running out.
