Cyprus postpones vote on forced levy

The go-ahead from the Cypriot Parliament has still been postponed measures agreed with the European Union in exchange for international aid of 10 billion euros. The vote, initially expected for today, was postponed to 16pm tomorrow afternoon. This was announced by the president of the Cypriot Parliament, Yannakis Omirou.

The Cypriot assembly (made up of only 56 deputies) is engaged in a race against time to validate the agreement before the reopening of the banks, which today observe a day of closure for holidays.

The most controversial measure is the forced levy on bank current accounts: a one-off tax of 6,75% on deposits up to 100 euros and 9,9% beyond this threshold. The government works on one proposal to dampen this intervention
