For the government of Cyprus, the costs of rescuing the island have risen from an initial 17,5 to 23 billion euros. “It is a fact – explains the government spokesman, Christos Stylianides – that the November memorandum spoke of a financial need of 17,5 billion euros.
Now it emerges that this figure has become 23 billion euros”. In effect this means that the government of Cyprus, if it is to avoid financial collapse, must find another 6 billion euros, on top of the 7 billion already combined and which is added to the 10 billion euros of international aid.
“Who is responsible for all this? – asks the spokesman – The fault is the fear of responsibility and the indecision of the previous government”.
