Cerved: since the beginning of 2013, more than 4 businesses have closed, +13% year on year

2012 was the worst year since the beginning of the crisis, but 2013, as far as businesses are concerned, is likely to be even tougher. Indeed, in the first three months of the year, 4.218 businesses closed, 13% more than in the same period of 2012. Last Monday alone, 58 companies surrendered.

These pitiless figures were revealed by Cerved, a group specializing in business analysis and credit risk assessment, which examined the bankruptcy applications registered with the Chambers of Commerce.

In 2012, there were 12.442 companies that had closed their doors, at an average of 34 per day, a number that increased by 2,3% on 2011 and even by 32% compared to 2009. The average for the first quarter of 2013 is 43 businesses closed each day.

Lhe situation, as Cerved CEO Gianandrea De Bernardis explains, is extremely dramatic: “Unfortunately, our surveys continue to deliver a picture of the crisis that shows no sign of changing. What's worse is that the crisis will have a long-lasting effect on bankruptcy applications, with effects that will most likely be felt even when the long-awaited recovery arrives”.
