Catalonia: Parliament meeting prohibited

This was decided by the Spanish constitutional court, accepting in a few hours the appeal presented this morning against the convening of the meeting by the Catalan socialist party (PSC) - During the session, President Puigdemont would in all probability have proclaimed independence

The Spanish Constitutional Court has suspended the meeting of the Catalan parliament scheduled for Monday as a precaution. During the session, President Carles Puigdemont intervened on last week's referendum, in all likelihood declaring the region's independence.

In a few hours, the Madrid consulta accepted the appeal presented this morning against the convening of the meeting by the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC), the referent in Catalonia of the Spanish PSOE.

It is not clear at the moment what will be the decision of the Catalan assembly in which the independence supporters have an absolute majority and which in a legislation approved in September, also rejected by the Constitutional Court of Madrid, decided that if the 'yes' vote won in the referendum a transitional law of higher value than the pronouncements of any Spanish court would come into force.

The Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy had asked the Catalan president Carles Puigdmeont to "return to legality" and give up "as quickly as possible" the project for a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (DUI) to avoid "greater evils".
