Christmas cashback from 150 euros: this is how it works

The extra cashback is also here. According to some rumors circulated over the weekend, the government is thinking of a new measure to encourage consumption over the Christmas period: a 10% refund on expenses made in December with traceable instruments. Here's what you need to know, at least based on the information circulated so far.

1) How do I have to pay to be entitled to a refund?

The options are different: bank transfer, credit card, debit card, prepaid or payment apps such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Satispay. Therefore, cash is excluded.

2) What are the other requirements?

You must be at least 18 years old, be resident in Italy and register on the "Io" app of the public administration or on any other systems made available by operators affiliated with PagoPa. With the registration it will be necessary to provide the tax code, the details of one or more cards and the Iban, because the refunds will be credited by the State to the current account.

3) How many payments do I have to make to be entitled to a refund?

It is probable that the minimum number of payments to be made in December to be eligible for cashback will be set at 10. Furthermore, there should also be a ceiling for individual expenses of 150 euros and a ban on splitting payments to increase transactions.

4) What is the maximum refund?

The maximum repayable amount is 150 euros, which will therefore only be collected by those who spend at least 1.500 euros during the month.

5) When will the refund arrive?

Perhaps already before the end of the year, through a direct transfer to the current account.

6) Is the cashback also valid for e-commerce?

No. The measure, designed above all to help the retail trade, does not apply to online purchases, but only to in-store purchases.

7) Is it the same cashback I've already heard about in the past months?

No. We need to be careful on this point: the new extra-cashback is a similar measure but different from the one envisaged in the 2021 maneuver. Unlike the latter, in fact, it is calibrated to the month of December alone to mitigate the impact of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic on small businesses, which make up a significant portion of their annual turnover during the holidays.
