Cameron: if Juncker leads the European Commission, Great Britain will leave the EU

The British prime minister believes that Juncker's choice "would destabilize his government so much that it would be forced to bring forward the referendum on the EU" and the result at that point would be in favor of leaving Europe, because "a man of the years Eighties cannot lead today's Europe”.

Cameron: if Juncker leads the European Commission, Great Britain will leave the EU

If Jean-Claude Juncker is appointed president of the EU Commission, Great Britain will leave the European Union. The threat came directly from Downing Street's number one, David Cameron, according to Der Spiegel, which cites sources "close to the participants" at last Tuesday's EU summit.

The British premier believes that Juncker's choice "would destabilize his government so much - reads the German weekly - that it would be forced to bring forward the referendum on the EU" and the result at that point would be in favor of leaving Europe, because "a man from the XNUMXs cannot lead Europe today".

The conservative Juncker was the candidate of the European People's Party, the party that obtained the most votes in the recent EU consultations. The first attempt to create a new government team in Brussels would therefore fall to him: denying him this possibility at the behest of Cameron would mean making the interests of the chancelleries prevail over the will of the voters, who for the first time expressed themselves knowing upstream who they were the candidates of the various camps to lead the Commission.

Cameron allegedly addressed German Chancellor Angela Merkel in particular, but on Friday - after some hesitation - she announced her support for Juncker. The president of the European Commission is formally indicated by the government leaders of the member states, but this time the last word will be up to the European Parliament, which will have to elect him.
