Electricity and gas bills, towards a new postponement of the free market

In a hearing before the Senate Industry Commission, the Minister of Economic Development, Stefano Patuanelli, announces an extension of the stop to the protected market: "We need more awareness and an increase in sellers".

Electricity and gas bills, towards a new postponement of the free market

We are moving towards the umpteenth postponement of the transition to the free market for electricity and gas bills. This was anticipated by the Minister of Economic Development, Stefano Patuanelli during the hearing before the industry commission of the Senate. Not only that, the possible extension will be accompanied by changes aimed at better informing users and increasing the number of sellers.

Italy, according to Patuanelli, would not be ready yet, because the process of transition from the protected market to the free market, which will determine the stop to the supply of electricity and gas to consumers under conditions set by the Energy Authority (Arera) , must be "accompanied by greater awareness of customers and an increase in sellers, which today does not allow for an immediate and tout court exit from 2020", said the minister.

Not you will have to “simply move forward that date, otherwise we will find ourselves with the same conditions", but it will be a process "that we will carry out in the coming weeks and months, to accompany these elements to a extension of the exit which will not be tout court“, Patuanelli clarified.

The entry into force of the free market for electricity and gas users is currently scheduled for 1 July 2020, a date fixed after various extensions already established over the years. From that date, clarifies the Arera, “price protection services will no longer be available. The continuity of the supply will in any case be guaranteed to small customers who do not yet have a contract on the free market, so that they will not suffer any interruption during the period necessary to find a new offer".
