Biomethane: Europe authorizes Italy to invest in new structures. Off to the projects

With biomethane, dependence on traditional sources and gas imports are reduced. EU contributions up to 40% of the value of the projects.

Biomethane: Europe authorizes Italy to invest in new structures. Off to the projects

The biomethane production plants can be supported with the money from the PNRR. The European Commission has given its assent to state aid for this type of plant, which is strategic for reducing dependence on traditional sources. The European Commission has approved overall 4,5 billion support. Investments can concern both new installations and the conversion of existing ones. According to EU forecasts, biomethane will be used mainly in the transport and heating sectors. An indication to this effect is also contained in the RePowerEu plan. The opinion of the Vice-President of the Commission is optimistic Margrethe Vestager, according to which the provision "will help Italy achieve its emission reduction targets, to reduce its dependence on Russian fossil fuels and to improve the security of its gas supply”.

The biomethane wealth of agricultural activities

Sustainable biomethane will come from agricultural and agro-industrial biomass, where real supply chains have been created over time waiting to receive public aid. The references to the PNRR, therefore, are very pertinent since the government has allocated around 2 billion for this purpose of Euro. More than 800 million should go to the technological conversion of existing equipment. The prediction of is also high national annual production: 600 million cubic meters.

The phase of the projects that will be selected through tenders with the maximum operational limit will now kick off until 30 June 2026. The money goes to cover investments of up to 40% in the form of contributions on a total available 1,7 billion euros. Of course it will be necessary to demonstrate the construction or modernization of the structures, in order to collect them. Also for a period of 15 years with a budget of 2,8 billion euros you will be able to receive aid for the incentive tariffs. The total of the two forms of support amounts to 4,5 billion euros.

Biomethane: the information campaign is underway, four Regions have already started

The energy power of biomethane has been in the attention of Italian politics for a long time. The Biogas Consortium and the agricultural organizations have repeatedly asked for the aid which is now finally arriving. Thematic meetings were organized in the area to explain how it is produced, what is needed and how much it can be worth in the country's circular economy. Emilia Romagna, Marche, Puglia, Campania, for example, have so far organized themselves autonomously, pointing out that they can get into the gas pipes up to 6,5 million cubic meters over a few years. The decisions about reduction of Russian gas imports they simply go to the aid of a natural carrier with no emissions with structures generally far from inhabited centres. The simultaneity of more clean energies has the advantage of building a perspective closer to the abatement of Co2 and price containment. Greater production will decrease the prices that Europe has pledged to support with those 2,8 billion euros. Impressive numbers that have also aroused the interest of Snam and other Italian distributors in biomethane. Perhaps the moment of truth has arrived.
