Bayer, earnings boom in 2016 (+10%)

Profits of the German chemical giant reached 4,5 billion – Turnover is also growing – Positive fourth quarter but below estimates.

Bayer closed 2016 with a net profit of 4,53 billion, up 10,2% on 2015. Earnings per share were 5,44 euros. Revenues, on the other hand, reached 46,8 billion, for an increase of 1,5%.

However, at constant exchange rates and excluding the effects of the product portfolio, the turnover of the German chemical giant would have increased by 3,5%.

At the end of 2016 Bayer's net debt had fallen to 11,8 billion euros, compared to 17,45 billion at the beginning of the year. Bayer's operating activities generated cash flow of 8,26 billion euros for the full year.

Narrowing our gaze to just the fourth quarter of 2016, Bayer achieved a positive net result of 453 million, down 26% on the year. The result, which was affected by extraordinary items such as restructuring costs and those of legal disputes, is worse than the 712 million consensus of the Wall Street Journal.

However, in the three months to December 31, the German chemical giant recorded an adjusted EBITDA up 13,7% to 2,18 billion euros, against a 4,6% increase in revenues to 11,82 billion .
