Bank of Italy, Palazzo Chigi on the field: independence will be protected

Sources from Palazzo Chigi intervene to deny the press reconstructions and specify that Paolo Gentiloni will be based on the prerogatives of appointment established by law and inspired by the "safeguarding of the Institute's autonomy". Meanwhile, Ignazio Visco went to the Bicameral investigation into the banking crises and made available the documentation of the Bank of Italy Supervision, 4.200 pages, under consideration of the confidentiality constraint

Bank of Italy, Palazzo Chigi intervenes on the ongoing battle. Sources of the Presidency of the Council let the disappointment filter through for the reconstructions published by the press on the matter after the motion of the Pd, approved on Monday evening in Parliament, which in fact asks for a replacement in Via Nazionale. And after the tough stance on Tuesday by Pd secretary Matteo Renzi who insisted on the need to "turn the page". The mandate of the governor Ignazio Visco, given until a few days ago as the most probable successor of himself, expires on October 31st and now the whole question of renewal has returned to the high seas.

The same sources at Palazzo Chigi underline that on the subject of the Bank of Italy the decisions of the Prime Minister "will be based on the prerogatives attributed to him by law and inspired exclusively by the criterion of safeguarding the autonomy of the Institute". The attempt to restore calm to the troubled waters of politics and to avoid institutional conflicts is evident.

Visco for his part has made it known that he is ready to go to Parliament and to make available the Bankitalia archive on the most critical banking events after the offices have completed the examination on confidentiality. The governor presented himself at Palazzo San Macuto, headquarters of the bicameral commission of inquiry into the banking sector. The president Pier Ferdinando Casini, with the vice presidents, Mauro Maria Marino and Renato Brunetta, received it and, specifies a note, "the Governor, in a spirit of institutional collaboration, has provided the Commission with the list of requested documents which will be made available provision as soon as the ongoing secrecy classification by the Bank of Italy offices has been completed".

The list of documents delivered by Ignazio Visco, approximately 4.200 pages, which the Bank of Italy will make available to the commission, concerns seven banking crises: the two Veneto banks Popolare di Vicenza and Veneto Banca, Monte dei Paschi di Siena and the 4 banks put into resolution two years ago (Etruria, Ferrara, Chieti and Marche). Documents which, however, are not immediately available to the commissioners since, as the note from the bicameral commission specified, the legal service of the central bank will first have to indicate all those covered by official secrecy.
