Banks: net bad loans down 25% in 2017

This was announced by the ABI in its monthly report – In December 2016, their amount was equal to 86,8 billion euros. In the same month of the following year, the balance decreased to 64,4 billion euros – Loans also did well, rising by 1,8% y/y in January.

Good news for banks, but also for savers. In 2017, the net non-performing loans in the banks suffered a sharp reduction, falling by 25,8%. In December 2016, their amount was 86,8 billion euros. In the same month of the following year, the balance decreased to 64,4 billion euro, with a fall of more than 22 billion euros.

The ABI makes it known in its monthly report. The decline, explains the Italian Banking Association, is due in particular “to the relevant sale transactions completed last year".

In the same report it is also noted that, compared to November 2015, the month in which the maximum level of non-performing loans in the portfolios of our banking institutions was reached, the reduction is approximately 24,5 billion euro.

Taking into consideration only the month of December 2017, after the pause in November, the net non-performing loans of Italian banks decreased from 65,9 to 64,4 billion.

At the same time it is necessary to point out the acceleration of the loans to households and non-financial corporations which, in January, grew by 1,8% year on year against +1,38% in December. Based on initial estimates, total loans to residents in Italy (private sector plus public administrations net of repurchase agreement loans with central counterparties) amount to 1.770 billion euro, marking an annual change of +2,9% ( +1,5% the previous month).
