People's banks: the path of reform resumes

In the Senate, in the Finance Committee, this morning the select committee addressed the subject of the reform of cooperative banks. The conference of group leaders had urged to speed up the work in order to reach a shared text quickly enough. On the table there are five bills that will have to find a summary in a unified version. “Today we proceeded to define the issues and build a methodological path – explains Senator Giuliano Barbolini, Pd group leader in the Finance Committee and signatory of a specific bill -. Everyone is willing to arrive at a shared text”.

There are many topics to be addressed: from the role of shareholders to that of foundations, passing through governance. “There is awareness – continues Barbolini – that it is a question of intervening on issues of relevance and complexity and therefore there is also a dutiful caution and prudence”. The redefinition of the regulation of cooperative banks has been dragging on for some time, for more than one legislature, "but as far as I am concerned, I am of the opinion that Parliament must reach a conclusion".

Barbolini for the moment prefers to avoid going into the merits of the discussion. But he underlines how in the meeting reference was made to enhancing the profile and role of cooperation in the credit sector. “The point of reference is to consolidate this business segment, which is significant and valuable also for the relationship with the local area”.

A roadmap has not yet been drawn up, giving a mandate to technicians and commission officials to carry out the appropriate in-depth studies on the texts deposited. Then the process will start with the aim of reaching a shared text possibly by March-April. Speaker is Senator Anna Bonfrisco, of the Pdl.
